Summary on Nazi Propaganda by Roshan & Maran

Summary on Nazi Propaganda

Roshan Ragumaran & Maran PakeerathanMay 1, 2012

Propagandas were used to influence the German citizen to support the NSDAP (Nazi Party) during Adolf Hitler’s leadership of Germany. Propagandas were not the only communication tool Adolf Hitler used to persuade the people of Germany, he used books, movies, art, music, radio, press, and even newspapers. Many Jewish people were hurt emotionaly by the tools Adolf Hitler used, so they tried destroying them. In The Book Thief Death says (1)“There were the erased pages of Mein Kampf, gagging, suffocating under the paint as they turned.”  According to the article Nazi Propaganda German children read anti-Jewish propaganda books such as DER GIFTPILZ ( "The Poisonous Mushroom").  Adolf Hitler was very serious about communicating his messages across Germany, so he established a Ministry that focused only on communicating tools such as propagandas. It was led by Joseph Goebbels; he was appointed the minister of propaganda by Adolf Hitler.

According to the article Nazi Propaganda the movies that were made to discriminate Jews portrayed them as “subhuman” creatures. An example of a Movie is “The Eternal Jew (1940), directed by Fritz Hippler, portrayed Jews as wandering cultural parasites, consumed by sex and money.”. Propaganda played a huge role in the mass murder of Jews, Nazi propaganda was vital to persuade almost all the German citizens that Jews did not belong in Germany. In The Book Thief (2)Lisel loses hope and begins to disdain the written word, having learned that Hitler’s propaganda is to blame for the war and the holocaust.

The Rise of Nazism

The Book Thief Blog Assignment

Summary

The Rise of Nazism

World War II was caused by racism, pride, fascism and extreme nationalism. As well of the rise of Nazism, but what caused it? There are four factors that caused Nazism, World War I humiliation, economic depression, stab-in-the-back theory and charismatic leadership.

After the events that took place in World War I, Germany was burdened with all the blame resulting in humiliation. This caused Germany to pay for all the damages and had to put restrain on their military, resulting Germany to seek out revenge. The economy of Germany started to plummet after the amount of money they had to pay off for World War I. The Nazis used hatred and racism to unite the Germans to use Jews and communists as scapegoats, as well with Hitler’s amazing leadership abilities he was able to persuade a whole entire nation to not only change the form of government to dictatorship but as well to persuade a whole nation to go into war.
Quotes

“There would be a parade. Marching. Music. Singing. There would be a fire.”  - Pg 101

“…destroy the evil machinations plotting to infect the motherland with its deplorable ways. “The immoral! The Kommunisten!”...“Die Juden – the Jews!” – Pg 110

“Toward the end of 1938, when the Jews were cleared out completely after Kristallnacht, the Gestapo visited, They searched the house, and when nothing or no one suspicious was found, Hans Hubermann was one of the fortunate: He was allowed to stay.” – Pg 183

Interesting Facts

Rhineland had been demilitarized by the Treaty of Versailles but Hitler sent troops in their anyways in 1936. France and Britain took to appeasement and did nothing. Hitler’s lebensraum got bigger.

14 year old boys had to join the Hitler-Jugend. Here they would ultimately be prepared for war. They were soldiers in the making. The boys would sing songs about war and do drills. In English the Hitler-Jugend means the Hitler youth.

The German parliament, known as the Reichstag, was burned down mysteriously which gave Hitler his chance to pass The Enabling Act. This gave Hitler an infinite amount of power to rule over Germany.

Bomb Shelters(Germany)

By: Sujany T and Nigarsini S
Summary:Bomb Shelters, are commonly known as Air-raid shelters. They were built for citizens as protection during bombings in WWII. Bomb shelters could also be thought as bunkers. Recently, an old WWII bomb shelter that protected many citizens in Carshalton Park, has been found, in Germany.
This bomb shelter could hold up to a thousand people. Historians have said that the Carshalton Park was hit many times due to the German Luftwaffe bombers during the war. Historians believe that the shelter “consisted of a rectangle of four corridors, approximately five feet across”.
This was the only way for anyone to survive bombs and other massive weapons that were used to attack, in WWII. Not many civilians died because when the sirens began - most civilians, like Liesel’s family and friends, fled to their nearest bomb-shelters for protection.
Relevant Quotes:
This Bomb Shelter can also be related to the Book Thief. One example is during the air-raids or bombings in Germany, Liesel and everyone else on her block flee to 45 Himmel Street’s basement.
Their basement was approved to be safe and had protection against any air-raids that might fall towards them. Hans Hubermann states during the first air-raid or bombing, “This way…..we can hear when the raids are coming even before the sirens start. They make a cuckoo sound and then announce the regions at risk.”
This siren will make sure the people are aware of another air-raid and that they should move to a safe place. The Narrator says that, “Even from the cellar, they could vaguely hear the tune of bombs.” This shows how loud and violent the air-raid was.
The Narrator once again says, “…to shut out the din of the basement, Liesel opened one of her books and began to read.” This shows how she kept everyone calm and entertained in the cellar while the real air-raid ended.
Interesting Facts:
People would bring games, books, food and bottled drinks inside these shelters to keep themselves entertained while the air-raids took place.
Several people and many families sheltered themselves under their staircase for protection because they thought it was the best place to be.
One in every five schools and buildings were destroyed or damaged by bombs.
Here is a VIDEO about an air-raid shelter that has been found in Devonport Park;

Book Thief Research Summary: The Allied Bombings

Summary-
"Allied bombing of Germany during the Second World War"
The article "Allied bombing of Germany during the Second World War" by John Kenneth Galbraith briefly states that the several bombings of German cities during the last days of the second world war were not as effective as planned by the British and American armed forces. While they were intensely being attacked, Germany continued to increase their production, proving to be an impenetrable force.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/sep/10/allied-bombing-germany-dresden

The fact that the tools being utilized by the Germans were not easily destructible and therefore, re-designed in minimal time and effectively managed help ensure that the Germans would not suffer great damage from the bombings. The Germans also moved their production to locations such as schools and churches. A clear example of this included the attack on the airplane plants which was toothless. The Americans and the British forces had very little effect other than destructing German land.

Interesting Facts
-The British forces often bombed during the night and targeted central cities
-Working-class areas suffered the most damage during bombings
-The Americans used daylight raids but had difficulty placing their targets
-Many prominent attacks occupied the United States` 8th Air Force for several months
-During 1939-45, 3.4 million tons of bombs were dropped by the Allies, averaging around 27,000 tons per month

Quotes from the Book
"Did they deserve any better, these people? How many had actively persecuted others, high on the scent of Hitler's gaze, repeating his sentences, his paragraphs, his opus? Was Rosa Hubermann responsible? The hider of a Jew? Or Hans? Did they all deserve to die? The children?" (Zusak,375-76)

"Even from the cellar, they could vaguely hear the tune of bombs. air pressure shoved itself down like a ceiling, as if to mash the earth. A bite was taken of Molching's empty streets."(Zusak, 380)

"In the morning, the damage was inspected. No one died, but two apartment blocks were reduced to pyramids of rubble, and Rudy's favourite Hitler Youth field had an enormous bowl spooned out of it. Half the town stood around its circumference. People estimated its depth, to compare it with their shelters." (Zusak,385)

Book thief blog assignment. COMMUNISM and NAZISM by: Sam and Rhiannon

Communists are a group of people who does not like anything belong to the people of the nation beside the government. They want everything in the nation including stores and production runned by the government so there are no citizen claiming anything. After the WW1, communism started rising in the Western Europe. Many countries hated communism because, no keeps anything for them selves. Even the houses are runned by the government. This was strongly hated by Germany and Hitler (who rose to power after Germany lost the WW1 and lost a lot of resources.). The Soviet union first got communism and spread it all over Europe.
Nazism and Communism

Adolf Hitler
Nazis were group of people who followed a very big war leader of the history; Adolf Hitler. Nazis were influenced by Hitler to be racist to African Americans, Other color people and specifically Jewish people. Nazis killed a lot of Jewish people and a lot of Communists. They hated Jews; the Jewish people were not a part of the master called the Aryan. Germans were very proud of themselves because they were mostly Aryans. Nazis also hated Communists because, Communism relied on brother hood and every one working together. Also, the communists were not the member of the master race. They even hated bisexuals, Gypsies, and people with disabilities.

When Hitler came in power, he first encouraged citizens to join him and support him all the time. He then brain washed them by telling them the master race theory and the hatred for other colors. Nazis were formed and the collapse of Jews and communists in Germany began. Nazis killed Jews like, they were game birds. Even communists were tortured and murdered badly. Hitler feared the communists.

Interesting Facts: Even people with disbilities were killed because they were just a burden to Germany and they were a threat to the master race called the Aryans. Thousands of bi-sexual people were killed too. About 6 million Jews were killed! Thousands of Communists and also more then 50% of the Germany's gypsies and bisexuals were killed by Hitler. He was very evil and was very selfish.

Hitler Youth

Randy Ketwaroo & Mirza Khan

Summary:
Hitler youth were a great way to build leaders in Nazi Germany. The Hitler Youth was established in 1926 and were originally intended to follow the movement of the Germans Worker Party. Hitler’s motive for creating this group was to assemble all the youth and make them adapt to military lifestyle by making them undergo vigorous training to become a soldier at an early age. Kids were 10 years of age and would join a group called the Jungvolk (boys age 10-14) and they would soon join the actual HJ (Hitler Youth age 14-18) their original mission was to bring Hitler to power. They soon started a new mission which was bringing victory in the war. They would go door-to-door trying to collect scrap metal for war and other purposes.
Girls also were very interested in becoming a Hitler youth leader so they formed a group called the BDM (Bund Deutscher Mädel) in 1930 a younger division was added. They would do various things such as help wounded soldiers. In 1942, there were many bomb raids so Hitler decided to create WELS camps. They would enlist boys 16-18 to undergo mandatory three weeks war training where they would learn various skills. The Battle of Berlin occurred in 1945 and as Germany was being breached, the members of the Hitler Youth were enlisted in to the army and contributed to the German defense lines. Hitler youth camps are useful in some ways but seemed like a lot of work and neglect.
 Interesting Facts:
- 5000 KLV camps were created by 1945
- From 1940 to 1945 about 2.8 million children were sent to these camps
- The main role for females were to give birth to healthy, racially ‘pure’ boys
Quotes:
Page 268 – “With his ears,” Rudy finished. “He can’t –” “Right, that’s it.” …  “Both of you – six laps of the grounds.”
Page 283 – “It’s on my chin, too. My chin! I’m lucky I didn’t swallow it! …  The field at Hitler Youth just got fertilized,”

What is the myth at the 1936 Olympic games?

As the myth goes, in the 1936, the Olympics games were held in Berlin, Germany, and it was called “Hitler’s Games". On the first day of the Olympic Games, Hitler, “Führer”, allowed the victors of the events to come to his box. When Jesse Owens, an African American athlete, won the 100m dash, many Germans were very impressed with his talents. However Adolf Hitler departed after he saw the results, and refused to shake hands with Jesse Owens due to his colour.

The legend above is wrong, and over the years the story of this event has changed a lot. The reality is during the first day it was late, and Adolf Hitler left after the German athletes lost in their events. Jesse Owens was not in this event. The Olympic official said to Hitler to congratulate all of the athletes or none of them. He decided to stop congratulating the athletes. After the games were done, the Führer decided to invite all the winning athletes to the “Reich Chancellery”, so he could personally congratulate, and shake their hands, including Jesse Owens. Additionally the Germans respected Jesse Owens a lot, and they called him “The Fastest Man”. They also named a street after him. This African American athlete said that he was treated well during his stay. The myth in the 1936 Berlin games was a lie, and the reality of Hitler shaking Owens’ hand was true.

Interesting Facts
Jesse Owens explained “... the warmth of his reception in Germany and his happiness during those days in Berlin...”
In the article, it contained a letter to the Director of ZDF. It stated “... Adolf Hitler received and congratulated the German Olympic winners of the 1936 Games in the place of honour at the Olympic stadium...”
Relevant Quotes
“Even the most racist Germans were amazed with the efforts of Owens...” ( Zusak, 56)
“Owens is looking good,” he began to commentate. “This could be his greatest victory ever….” ( Zusak, 57)
“You know Papa, the Black Magic one.” “I’ll give you black magic.” ( Zusak, 59)
“Because you shouldn’t want to be like black people or Jewish people or anyone who is…not us.” ( Zusak, 60)
“It’s like you’re German or Catholic.” (Zusak, 60)
“Oh. Is Jesse Owens Catholic?” ( Zusak, 60)
